ABOUT THE SKIN

Fine lines and wrinkles

The ageing process, sunlight, smoking, environmental pollution and even excessive frowning or smiling damage the skin inevitably resulting in fine lines and wrinkles. Most people would prefer more youthful looking skin.

As we age the skin becomes stiffer and less elastic and when exposed to repetitive movement of the underlying muscles, wrinkles appear. These effects are most noticeable around the forehead, eyes and lips. Sun exposure accentuates this process and it is noticed at younger ages in patients with lighter skin types.

The following changes are visible in the ageing face:

Superficial skin changes:- textural change, discolouration, pigment abnormalities, red blemishes, very fine lines

Superficial wrinkles:- appearing only during the movement of underlying muscles

Deeper wrinkles:- present when the underlying muscles are relaxed and caused by the continual folding and creasing of the skin

Sagging of skin caused by loss of deeper fat cushions and boney changes

How it Works

Laser skin tightening works by using safe and targeted near infrared light (NIR). We use the Alma Lasers NIR which safely and effectively heats the dermis (inner layers of skin), stimulating the production of collagen. The treatment helps to tighten the skin, protecting it against future ageing. A healthy layer of collagen in the dermis will help to provide skin with the elasticity and resilience that it needs, preventing sagging and keeping skin tight and smooth.

Laser skin tightening differs to laser skin resurfacing in that the laser does not affect the top layer of skin. Instead, the laser penetrates deep within the skin, stimulating new cell growth and collagen production from within.

Treatment Areas

Laser skin tightening can be used on a wide range of areas and although it is more commonly used on the face, it can also be used to treat areas of the body, too, such as loose skin on the abdomen after pregnancy.

During treatment

During treatment, we’ll apply a cold gel to the area to be treated. Next, one of our practitioners will pass the Alma Lasers NIR over the surface of skin to deliver very precise and targeted pulses of light to the treatment area. Most patients tolerate the treatment extremely well and some patients find the treatment painless.

Results

Laser skin tightening is usually very effective. Results are often visible after just one treatment and will continue to improve over the days and weeks after treatment as skin cells regenerate and collagen production is stimulated. A course of 3 to 6 treatments will usually be recommended, depending on your specific skin complaint and the area to be treated. Maintenance treatments may also be required.
