Acne Rosacea, Redness, Sun Damage & Pigmentation.

INTRODUCTION

Acne Rosacea, Redness, Sun Damage & Pigmentation

Rosacea is characterized by excessive facial redness, flushing and nodulation and may be extra sensitive to topical irritants. Skin Technology’s specialist skin care ranges helps this condition with natural, non-irritating ingredients that calm the skin and target inflammation. While as much as 90% of rosacea flares are associated with stress-induced inflammation, other factors such as environmental and dietary stresses and topical irritants can further advance this condition. Personally, I am not convinced that many people actually have true rosacea! I am sure most skin irritation is caused by harsh skin care products that have poor quality ingredients and string perfumes added which irritates a more sensitive skin! and exhausted its capacity to cope with these harsh ingredients.

In addition to sensitive skin prone to irritation and reddening, rosacea sufferers often have reduced melanin to block harmful UV rays, making proper sun care essential. The correct home care plan addresses these concerns with nonirritating, chirally correct products that target both the internal and external sources of inflammation and shield vulnerable skin from damaging UV light.

This is a problem that affects both males and females and can be contracted at any time, however, once infected this problem can only be controlled and not cured. Helping to keep the skin as strong and robust as possible is the most important long-term concern. A course of 2 – 3 light therapy treatments will help to remove any broken capillaries and erythema in the area and using the correct home products will maintain the problem from looking unsightly.

Questions you may have about Pigmentation/Sun Damage

The Home care solutions are listed on the What Skin Type?
The suggested treatments are, light peels, usually three to four a year to keep the skin at its optimum, one to two Limelight Photofacials, to clear any superficial redness and vascularity, Laser Genesis for helping the skin to become more robust, and perhaps a lightweight Fractional for lines, wrinkles and scar tissue.
What are Pigmentation & Age Spots?
Pigmentation, the medical term for darker-coloured patches of skin that can appear on the face, hands, décolletage, neck and shoulders as well as other areas, this can really make your skin look much older than your age. Also known as age spots and sun spots, pigmentation is caused by UVA rays that penetrate deep within the skin, stimulating melanin production. Pigmentation often occurs 10-20 years after the initial damage, and so sun spots showing on your skin now may well have been caused when you were in your teens or when you were a child. Of course using full spectrum UVA, UVB & UVC sun blocks will make sure no more damage occurs, as we age naturally our skin appears thinner, hence the appearance of the ‘sun damage’. Some data also suggests that pigmentation in younger women might be triggered by hormonal changes from the contraceptive pill or that can occur during pregnancy. Hormonal pigmentation can be treated very successfully in the clinic and with specialist home-care.
What treatment is available?
There are a range of treatment options available for pigmentation and age spots, including a number of topical creams, and is clinic at Skin Technology we use IPL (intense pulsed light) treatment to lighten blemishes and in many cases, to eliminate them completely. Before treatment, skin will be cleansed and a cooling gel applied to minimise discomfort. The practitioner will then pass the device over the surface of skin, delivering targeted pulses of light to the pigmented areas. The melanin in the pigmented areas of skin absorbs the light, stimulating cell renewal from deep within the skin. The heat from the light destroys the pigmented cells on the outer epidermis, and in most cases, skin from the treated area will flake off within 14 days, yielding lighter, brighter skin underneath. The IPL treatment also helps to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, improving the overall appearance of skin and helping to counteract future damage. Following treatment, the cooling gel will be removed, the skin cleaned and a moisturiser/SPF will be applied. Foundation can also be applied immediately.
When Will I See Results?
Skin cells start to renew fairly quickly following an IPL treatment and will patients will usually see results within a few weeks, but generally, the most noticeable results will be seen after a month, ti is because it takes approximately 4 weeks for a full cell turnover of skin. Some patients will see a noticeable change in the appearance of their pigmentation after just one session, although 2-4 treatments might be necessary in order to fade the pigmentation completely. However, with each treatment, pigmentation should fade.
